Discovering.............................................. Acqui Terme

Starting your visit from the central Piazza Italia, you can admire the new fountains of the “Ninfee”, and from
here proceed for C.so Italia the best street for shopping. At the beginning on the right hand side is the Stairway of the Schiavia overlooked by an archway from one of the gates of the Medieval Walls. We then carry on uphill until we reach the Bishop’s Residence (XVth century) and on the left hand side admire the Major Seminary Complex built following Arch. Vittone’s project. We then arrive at the Duomo, dedicated to the Madonna Assunta and consecrated in 1067 by the Bishop Guy, who later became the town’s Patron Saint. Inside the Church a special mentioning must be made for the Triptych of the Madonna of Montserrat (1480) a master-piece by the Spanish Painter Bartolomeo Bermejo, and the Crypt. Before leaving the P.za Duomo, we sugge-st you visit Jona Ottolenghi’s Old People’s Home in Via Verdi where you can admire the bronze statue of the “Prodigal Son” by Arturo Martini. From here you can choose to continue uphill until you reach the Paleologi Castle, which houses the Archaeological Museum refurbished in the year 2001, and it’s Botanic garden. Otherwise choose to go downhill and follow Via alla Bollente until you reach Piazza Bollente where the hot water spring is situated and the sulphur-bromine-iodine water gushes out at 74.5 C. From here we suggest a visit to two other squares: Piazza S. Francesco with it’s eighteenth century “la Rocca” fountain and the Convent Church of Saint Francis dating back to the 1400’s, and Piazza Addolorata where the beautiful Basilica of San Peter is situated, the town’s former Cathedral. Finally, leaving the town centre and heading for the “Bagni Area” you can admire the remains of the Roman Aqueduct. There are many magnificent and beautiful attractions awaiting for you in Acqui Terme.
