Towers and castles ............. Let’s discover the outskirts which are scatterei with towers and castles

The Monferrato area is scattered with castles. Most privately owned, are not only of enormous historical
and artistic significance but also offer the opportunity to explore the beautiful countryside.
Dominating the Erro Valley is the Castle of Melazzo, built in the XIth C.. It belonged to Del Bosco
Marquis, then the City of Alessandria and finally the Monferrato Marquis. In 1431 it was ransacked
by Francesco Sforza’s army and completely destroyed by the Spanish in the early XVIIth C., and
later restored by Marquis Gandolfi of Porto Maurizio. Nearby is the XIVth C. tower of Visone erected
on the foundations of a romanesque construction. Also worth visiting is the medieval tower of
Cartosio, which has recently been restored along with the XIIth C. Castle of Morsasco which is still
in excellent condition. Worth mentioning are also the Castles of Cremolino and Trisobbio, the latter
is characterized by elegant mullioned windows and a distinctive tower with battlements.
